Why now

A fixed deadline is colliding
with a workforce that isn't there.

A regulatory phase-out and a structural decline in farm labour are converging on Europe's highest-value vegetable crops, and the only chemical-free alternative isn't yet built for what follows.

01 — Regulation

Herbicide withdrawal is on a fixed timeline

  • Onion pre-emergence herbicides aclonifen and pendimethalin scheduled for withdrawal around 2027
  • Metribuzin already off the market; ~90 active substances flagged for substitution EU-wide

200 ha of onions today means roughly 10,000 hours of manual weeding a season at €35/hour, around €4.4M over ten years. With herbicides withdrawn and weed pressure doubled, that figure approaches €12M, before counting the €200,000 lost to weeds every season even under best-in-class control.

LUXEED transforms laserweeding from a massive, slow, energy-hungry process built for large farms into a fast, lightweight system accessible to everyone. A modular, low-weight footprint keeps soil structure intact and minimises compaction, so the ground keeps its natural capacity to absorb and carry water.

By ending chemical spraying and soil-degrading tillage, laserweeding aids carbon sequestration, opening carbon-credit revenue farmers can sell to third parties.

Early impact on herbicide reduction

A single onion season carries 4.95 litres of herbicide per hectare. Within its first two years on the market, LUXEED will remove 0.5 million litres of herbicide from the field, residue gone from produce, soil and water.
